What is pavement texture and why is it important for safety?

Pavement texture refers to the surface characteristics of the pavement material, including its roughness, pattern, and the aggregate size used in the mixture. It plays a crucial role in driving safety by influencing tire grip, water drainage, and vehicle handling. A well-textured pavement reduces the risk of skidding, enhances wet weather performance, and prolongs the lifespan of the roadway. Understanding and assessing pavement texture helps engineers and transportation agencies maintain optimal road conditions and improve overall road safety.

Are road agencies responsible for providing adequate friction on their roadways?

Yes. Road agencies in Canada are required to maintain their roads in a safe and passable condition, which by extension includes the provision of adequate friction.

What are some of the surface restoration techniques and treatments if friction or texture is low?

The most appropriate surface restoration technique(s) depend on why the friction or texture is low. GoodGrip can assess the surface condition and make surface restoration recommendations, including surface treatments such as chip seal, slurry seal, micro-surfacing, bonded wearing course, or overlay. Removing contaminants such as excess asphalt cement can be completed using micro-milling or hydro-blasting while polished aggregates can be treated with shot-blasting. Increased macrotexture can be imparted with diamond grinding and micro-milling.

Are there minimum recommended levels of pavement friction?

Yes. In 2023, the US Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) issued Report SA-23-006 (CHARACTERIZING ROAD SAFETY PERFORMANCE USING PAVEMENT FRICTION) that includes minimum investigatory levels for pavement friction (see Table 13). These levels were determined based on a comprehensive analysis of the relationship between pavement friction and accident rate. Maintaining pavement friction at or above these recommended levels greatly reduces the rate of accidents, thereby reducing the frequency and severof property damage, injuries, and fatalities.
